NEC Storage S1500
S1500 is a low-end disk array device with excellent price performance, offering 4Gbps FC host interface and consolidation of FC/SATA disk modules.
- Having up to 60 FC or SATA modules, the maximum capacity is 21.1TB.
- Host interface is FC 1 Gbps, 2 Gbps, or 4 Gbps.
- A RAID-6 technology is featured to assure continued operation even if error occur in two hard disks at the same time. This technology greatly enhances the availability of disk array. It can be used together with the RAID-1 and RAID-5.
- The S1500 not only has a performance-oriented intra-cabinet replication function that duplicates all volumes, but also a snapshot function that stores just the differences in updated data.
- The S1500 also has a dynamic pool function for flexible storage operations, which allows users to expand or change the logical disk capacity without affecting existing data.
FEATURES
Advanced Function
The S1500 supports SATA disk (400GB/ 500GB), which has large capacity and low price, as well as FC disk drives. FC and SATA disk drives can be consolidated in the same disk array (*1)
*1 Disk enclosure unit for SATA disk drive is necessary.
Two types of disk drives can be used as follows:
- FC disk drives: For non-stop operation or mission critical operation which requires high performance.
- SATA disk drtives: For backup use which requires large capacity with low price.
SATA disk drives are suitable for the following systems which requirelarge capacity with low price, without giving priority to performance.
1. Storage for large capacity data (Web, graphics, R&D, E-mail) including primary use.
2. Disk backup
3. Archive (Tamper proof function is also supported).
4. Replication volume for intra-unit copy (DynamicDataReplication).
5. Snap volume for snap shot (DynamicSnapVolume).
Dynamic Pool Function using RAID-6
Conventionally, the logical disks were managed in units of the physical sets of disks that made up the RAID, so that users who need to expand disk capacities had to install a fixed number of disks whether or not they were all necessary. The new dynamic pool function permits logical disk capacities to be changed dynamically. Physical disks can be added one at a time. The logical disks required can be managed efficiently, and the system is free from physical restrictions.
Introduction of the functions of the dynamic pool
Snapshot function
The snapshot function instantly creates a copy (snapshot) of one or several logical disks, allowing for a maximum of 16 generations of backup. Since only the differences in updated data are stored, the disk capacity required is smaller than the capacity for data replication, making a low-cost backup solution possible. (A separate software program product is required).
NEC Storage BaseProduct
This software product includes storage control software for carrying out basic control of NEC Storage S1500 and integrated storage management software, NEC Storage Manager, for carrying out integrated management of the NEC Storage S series including the NEC Storage S1500. This package is required to use the S1500 equipment.
NEC Storage Manager - integrated storage management software
This software provides integrated management of the NEC Storage S series including the S1500.
- GUI display of the configuration of logical disks and controllers.
- Monitoring and reporting errors.
- Collecting performance information on logical disk and controllers, displaying the collected information graphically, and monitoring performance.
Access Control
Access to the logical disks can be set for individual ports or individual hosts. (This requires a separate software program product).
Performance Monitoring
It provides real time displays of information on its performance, load monitoring and storage of statistics (This requires a separate software program product).
Preventive Maintenance
This function prevents the redundancy of the RAID processors from being lost. If it predicts that a disk drive will fail, that disk drive is automatically replaced with a hot spare disk drive, maintaining disk redundancy.
High Performance
4Gbps Host Interface
This unit has 4 ports of fibre channel as host interface. It supports 4Gbps (Max. 400MB/s) as well as 1Gbps/2Gbps.
high performance RAID processors
High performance RAID processors that enable inter-controller communication at 2GB/s are installed to implement the shared memory system. This feature not only enhances the performance, but also helps dynamic load balancing of the host interfaces. The Switch based disk enclosures permits high-speed access to the disk drives being used.
High Availability and High Reliability
RAID-6 Technology
The RAID-6 has a dual parity, which maintains the redundancy in the disk drive system even if one of them fails, allowing operation to continue even if two disk drives fail simultaneously, and increasing the reliability level of the equipment. SATA disk drives can also be dependable with RAID-6 technology.
